Structural engineering has been one of our core disciplines since the inception of our company in 1950. Our structural engineers work with a wide variety of structures ranging from historic to contemporary. We understand the challenges posed by the evolving nature of the built environment, and we use that knowledge to benefit our clients. Our broad structural skillset includes designing building structures and foundations; conducting building assessments; and designing rehabilitation projects for structures, facades, foundations, and roofs.

KHH is also a member of the U.S. Green Building Council and is therefore committed to the principles and practices of sustainable design for constructed facilities. It is our aim to reduce waste while completing projects in a timely and cost-effective manner.

Scope of Services

Structural Design of New Buildings and Additions

We provide full Structural Engineer of Record services for various types of buildings including steel, masonry, wood, concrete, Session Initiation Protocols (SIPs), and Insulated Concrete Forms (ICFs). These services extend from conceptual schemes through design and project completion.

Structural Analysis and Design of Building Renovations

We perform structural renovations for both historic and contemporary buildings. These services include comparative seismic analyses; review for changes to the building’s occupancy type; structural modifications to floors, roofs, walls, and columns; and floor vibration improvements.

Beyond Buildings

We provide structural design for more than just buildings. Our design experience includes photovoltaic arrays (both rooftop and stand-alone), signs, mechanical supports, crane supports, industrial systems, retaining walls, and foundations for tower structures such as wind turbines.

Structural Analysis, Review, and Reinforcing of Roofs

As a Central New York business, we understand the harsh impact winter can have on roofs. We have plenty of experience analyzing roofs and providing practical options to supplement load capacity when necessary.

Structural Condition Assessment and Rehabilitation of Existing Buildings

Our staff has performed structural condition assessments on all types of buildings. While completing these assessments, we focus on identifying potentially significant structural problems and developing practical solutions to address any negative conditions we identify.

Structural Load Capacity Analysis and Load Testing

Our team uses a wide variety of analysis techniques, including 3D computer analysis, to assess floor and roof load capacity. Whether or not existing drawings are available, we can perform our analyses on a plethora of existing structural systems.

Foundation Design for New Buildings and Additions

Working with the subgrade condition, we can design conventional spread footings as well as piles, caissons, augured piles, resistance and helical piles, minipiles, mat foundations, and frost-protected shallow foundations.
