Current Openings
Klepper, Hahn & Hyatt has an immediate need for a Building Envelope Specialist. The ideal candidate will have a degree in Architecture, Engineering, or a related building design field with four or more years of experience in building design. The Building Envelope Specialist performs analyses, design work, and field work on building envelope projects which include work on existing buildings and new construction to ensure the projects are completed to the agreed-upon client/owner requirements. Building envelope systems include roofing, facades, fenestration, and foundation and slab elements, with a focus on durability and thermal performance.
Essential Functions:
- Performs field assessments of existing buildings and specific conditions to identify problem conditions, diagnose causation, and develop recommendations to mitigate problem conditions.
- Performs reviews of existing and proposed building drawings to identify possible deficiencies and develop recommendations for improvements.
- Communicates with KHH Project Manager, clients, other team members, and government agencies as needed.
- Compiles information and prepares reports, and reviews and edits reports prepared by others.
- Develops building envelope details and assemblies which are complete, functional, practical, and constructible.
- Analyzes the thermal envelope performance of building details and assemblies.
- Prepares, reviews, and edits drawings and sketches to convey envelope design work.
- Prepares, reviews, and edits technical specifications for envelope elements.
- Assembles project documents for pricing, bidding and construction.
- Performs construction submittal reviews including material information, shop, and erection drawings.
- Performs site visits to construction projects and prepares site visit reports.
Qualifications:
- Degree in Architecture, Engineering, or a related building design field with four or more years of experience in building design.
- At least three years of experience in related work including building trades, forensics, and/or design and detailing.
- Professional knowledge of the underlying scientific principles and processes of the building envelope including thermodynamics, hygrodynamics, structural load transfer and the behavior of building materials.
- Practical understanding of the design, construction, testing, and performance of contemporary building air barriers, conductive thermal resistance, and thermal bridging mitigation.
- Familiarity and, ideally, experience with infrared thermography and blower door testing.
- Familiarity and, ideally, experience with THERM and WUFI software, as well as other heat flow and hygrometry programs.
- Familiarity with, and ideally, experience in performing Building Envelope Commissioning.
- Familiarity and experience with performing building construction site visits.
- Good working knowledge of industry standards, safety standards, and current design codes, including energy codes.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, and Microsoft Office.
- Must maintain regular and acceptable attendance at such a level as is determined by KHH’s sole discretion.
- Must be available and willing to work such overtime per day or per week as KHH determines is necessary or desirable to meet business needs.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Valid New York State driver license.

- Analyze and design structural steel, concrete, masonry, cold-formed steel, and wood-framed structures in conformance with governing building codes and design standards
- Conduct structural condition assessments of existing buildings and parking structures and prepare engineering reports
- Collaboratively work with other project team members to prepare contract documents
- Prepare technical specifications
- Prepare neat and organized engineering calculations
- Coordinate work with engineers of other disciplines, architectural teams, and contractors
- Perform construction administration phase services (submittal review, respond to RFI’s, conduct site visits, etc.)
- Develop construction cost estimates for structural work indicated on contract documents
- Review work prepared by less-experienced engineering staff
- Mentor one or more junior staff engineers, interns, or designers
- Project checking in accordance with QA/QC procedures
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Structural or Civil Engineering required
- Professional Engineer (PE) license required
- Minimum of 4 years of structural engineering building design experience required
- Understanding and application of code requirements
- Experience in using various structural analysis software
- Ability to meet deadlines
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, and Microsoft Office
- Valid driver license

- B.S. or M.S. degree in Civil, Structural, or Architectural Engineering from an ABET-accredited university located in the United States of America
- 6+ years of experience in the design of building structures
- Currently licensed as a Professional Engineer (P.E.) or Structural Engineer (S.E.)
- Proficiency with current industry software, including RISA, Enercalc, TEDDS, AutoCAD, Revit, and Microsoft Office
- Some knowledge of AutoCAD and Revit, or ability to efficiently work with engineering staff and AutoCAD Drafters and/or BIM Technicians to produce contract documents
- Demonstrated ability to lead a design team to develop coordinated contract documents within deadlines and project budget
- Must be highly motivated, proactive, and willing to take on multiple challenges at a time
