KHH Announces Retirement of Richard L. Applebaum

Klepper, Hahn & Hyatt has announced the retirement of Rich Applebaum after 40 years of service. Rich is a registered Professional Engineer in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Vermont. He has been a partner in the firm for the past 30 years, and president for 21 years. He began work at KHH as a structural engineer immediately after college. He will be retiring as of May 1.

Rich graduated from The Pennsylvania State University with a Bachelor of Architectural Engineering degree. He is currently a member of the American Institute of Steel Construction and ASTM. He is also certified by the Structural Engineering Certification Board. Rich was involved with the American Council of Engineering Companies, having served as President for the Central New York Chapter. KHH has been a member of the American Concrete Institute-CNY Chapter for decades, and Rich, as well as other firm members, has served as a judge for the annual Excellence in Design and Installation Awards for Masonry and Concrete.

During the course of his career, Rich developed a passion for historic masonry structures. Along with his work in structural engineering, Rich advanced his expertise in this area, including terra cotta, transitional, and other mass wall systems, and the application of lime mortars. He is currently on the ASTM C12 Committee for mortars and grouts, and has worked on revised standards for these materials for historic restoration projects.

Rich has worked with clients throughout Upstate New York, as well as in Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and Vermont. Some of his most notable projects include: the structural rehabilitation of Blair House, the President’s Guest House in Washington, D.C.; structural upgrades and historic envelope rehabilitation of the Crouse College building at Syracuse University; historic envelope rehabilitation of the old Onondaga County Courthouse; historic envelope rehabilitation of the Niagara Mohawk building; and structural upgrades and historic envelope rehabilitation of the State Tower Building. He also led projects at Boldt Castle and Singer Castle in the Thousand Islands.

Rich and Joan Applebaum will be living in their new home in Lewes, Delaware, and summering in Redwood, New York. Rich will be consulting on an as-needed basis.
