Paul, who previously worked for KHH from 2000 to 2008, is a senior engineer with more than 20 years of experience in civil and structural design. He graduated from the State University of New York at Buffalo with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering.
Below is a Q&A we held with Paul so you could get to know him in both a professional and personal light!
What sparked your interest in pursuing a career in engineering?
My grandfather was an electrical engineer and when I was a kid, I always thought it was cool that he could take things apart and fix them, and it made me want to be an engineer.
What do you most enjoy about your work as a structural engineer?
I enjoy the daily challenge of problem-solving and troubleshooting building performance.
How do you handle obstacles or challenges when working on a project?
I try to take a step back and consider the big picture, and use the opportunity to learn as much as possible about the topic at hand. I also try to consult with fellow engineers that may be more well-versed in a particular topic to get guidance.
In what areas are you most passionate about? Have the most experience in?
I am most passionate about and am most experienced in the investigation of building failures and recommendations for their repair. I am also very interested in the renovation and rehabilitation of existing buildings with the hope of extending their service life.
Do you have a mentor in this field? If so, what do you admire most about him/her?
It was my pleasure to work with Shawn, an engineer that I also consider a friend. He was always extremely patient with me. Shawn has a thorough, pragmatic approach to his work product that I respect and appreciate to this day.
Why is KHH a good fit for you?
I think that returning to KHH is an opportunity to combine my experience in structural design and building investigation with a well-rounded approach to structural engineering.
