First Presbyterian Church of Ithaca Roof Replacement
Klepper, Hahn & Hyatt, together with HazMat and historic preservation consultants, performed an initial roof condition survey of the entire church building to enable KHH to best recommend an appropriate repair/replacement strategy to the church members. The report developed from the survey allowed KHH to develop a project scope to fit the church’s budget.
During the design process, KHH actively maintained a working dialogue with the Ithaca Landmarks Preservation Commission to ensure that the project progressed on schedule. The now nearly complete project scope involved the replacement of the original Pennsylvania slate roof on the south-facing roof slope and adjacent intersection gable with new S1 Vermont slate, as Pennsylvania slate is no longer available. As part of the larger slate roof replacement project, the original integral gutters and fascia were replicated, the three south-facing original copper-clad dormers were repaired/restored, and a new system of pipe-rail-type snow guards was installed to limit the sliding of snow and ice.
