The Crouse Hospital Emergency Department Parking Deck Replacement earned an award from the American Concrete Institute Central New York Chapter at the ACI’s spring banquet. This project was recognized with a Silver Award for Excellence in Concrete Design and Installation.

The hospital, located in downtown Syracuse, recently undertook a building envelope restoration project which involved the design and replacement construction of the 10,625-square-foot Emergency Department parking deck. The original deck was constructed in 1972.

The prior construction consisted of an asphalt traffic course on rigid insulation and a coal tar waterproofing system, applied to a structural two-way concrete slab. The waterproofing system was leaking at the deck drains and along building expansion joints. The asphalt traffic course was deteriorating and had areas that lacked positive, uniform slopes to the existing deck drains. In addition, the story below grade is in active use by the hospital, so the envelope had to be secure.

The project team proposed removing the existing construction down to the waterproofing system, and replacing it with a leak detection system over the existing membrane, a new single-ply waterproof membrane, a drainage/protection board, rigid insulation, and a cast-in-place concrete traffic surface. The existing deck drains were replaced with new and improved custom drain assemblies, which were designed to intercept both surface flow and membrane level flow.
